FacesForce.com – Visual Communication Made Smooth

Posted by KillerStartups.com - all | August 31, 2009 .

In their own words

“Most of the time text will suffice to express our thoughts. Quite often though we need images to avoid lengthy explanations. Some other times you just need to show your face. But what about all of those together? The wait is over. FacesForce lets you combine video messaging, text and images into a single canvas* that you can share with selected recipients to clearly convey your thoughts.

At FacesForce we build useful web services to enhance asynchronous communication between individuals, teams, organizations.

With the use of a webcam and an internet connected pc, you can fashionably introduce yourself, your business, your ideas and more to prospects.”

Why it might be a killer

Those who are looking into communicating as fully and dynamically as possible will obviously take a shine to it.

What it does

Messaging is not for everybody. That is something understandable from as many points of view as you can think of. Psychologically speaking, there is a missing element that redounds to some impediments when it comes to bonding with the interlocutor. This is bad enough when it comes to making new friends, but in contexts like advertising the absence of images might break the whole process. For example, it might be necessary to explain something that a single picture would have conveyed in a minute – and in a far more convincing way. As a result, the existence of solutions like FacesForce is fully justified.

In principle, what this service does is to let you combine text along with images and video in a single, unified framework in order to get your point across more effectively. Think of it as a service that takes from lots of communication modalities and attempts to reach a sort of middle ground that could leave everybody reasonable happy.

These rich media messages can be shared with whomever you want, and they can even be password-protected just in case. That is all the more important if you are sharing work-related data when working with your team.

All you need in order to start employing this system is a webcam and a PC which is Internet-enabled. Registration is handled without batting an eyelid, and the system is free to begin with (a paid version will materialize later on).

Some questions

Which features will the forthcoming paid version bring about?

TweetBrain.com – Questions & Answers Powered By Twitter

Posted by KillerStartups.com - all | August 31, 2009 .

In their own words

“Questions & answers powered by the Twitter Community.”

Why it might be a killer

It is a direct way of coming across the knowledge you might be after, while those who help out can gain both recognition and rewards.

Some questions

What rewards are actually available to those who immerse themselves in this community?

What it does

Is there something you need to know? Forget about posting a question on places like forums. That has become a thing of the past. Now we do everything the Twitter way. And it is only natural – a forum would only be accessible by those who know where to head. Twitter offers you access to a never-ending pool of knowledge, and one that has the added advantage of being updated second by second.

Asking a question or posing one using TweetBrain is not really that hard to get to grips with – you simply use your Twitter credentials and tweet using the relevant terms. The questions and/or answers can be both favorited and retweeted, too. And if you want to see the hottest topics it is always possible to do so by way of the provided hotlists (found on the right–hand side of the main screen).

Bear in mind that if you decide to take part of this community your efforts will actually be rewarded – if you can stand as something like a paragon of knowledge it is only obvious that people will start taking notice and following you, and the site also includes a system of rewards for those who are active the most.

SeizureTracker.com – Tracking Epileptic Seizures

Posted by KillerStartups.com - all | August 31, 2009 .

In their own words

“Your free comprehensive resource for Seizure Logging.”

Why it might be a killer

The ones who have to live with epilepsy will find it invaluable – it is intuitive, flexible and provided at no cost.

What it does

A site that plays out a very worthwhile role, Seizure Tracker will empower any person who lives with epilepsy to keep track of the frequency of seizures and determine the pattern of such activity. Hopefully, this will enable people to understand the relationship that exists between seizure activity and the actual medication that is taken to treat it.

The provided tracker is wholly browser-based, and an account can be created at no cost at all. And in addition to tracking activity it is possible to keep track of doctor appointments. The information is presented in a very visual manner, as graphs are provided for comparison purposes. Moreover, the logs that are created are printer-friendly by default, so that if you wish to have physical access to the data you can do it without working too much of a sweat.

With the service being rendered free of charge it would be easy (and pointless) to complain about this and that, but I must frankly say that there is not a single aspect which has been left unattended. A very good resource, and one that deserves not to go unnoticed.

Some questions

What could be added to this service in order to make it even more appealing?

Grasshopr.com – A Civic Platform On The Web

Posted by KillerStartups.com - all | August 31, 2009 .

In their own words

“Grasshopr is an online civic platform enabling organizations and individuals to connect, communicate, and take action on issues at the federal, state and local level. Everyone should have unfettered access to the public policy process.”

Why it might be a killer

Such a platform equalizes everybody, and it gives people a ready chance to make their presences be felt.

Some questions

Are there other platforms like it currently available, or is this one setting a first?

What it does

To put it in simple words, Grasshopr is a civic platform which is entirely web-based. Its objective is to enable individuals to communicate among themselves and let each other know about any Local, State or Federal issue that might merit attention. In this way, advocacy groups can be created and turnout for physical events can be generated. Campaigns for raising awareness can also be easily taken care of.

There is an interesting (and worrying) fact: a representative amount of people sadly do not give current events the attention they deserve, not to mention that there do exist individuals that just close their eyes to the world. A platform like this one goes some way into alleviating such a fact, as those who are not commonly concerned about public issues can become acquainted with reality in a smooth context.

Ultimately, the spirit behind this site is one we all can agree with: “Everyone should have unfettered access to the public policy process”. As such, it will be interesting to see how quickly it can spread itself, and in which ways it will be promoted.

OurWorldOurStories.com – Tweeting For A Cause

Posted by KillerStartups.com - all | August 31, 2009 .

In their own words

“Help us build a library for Project Why. At 100000 followers, the children at Project Why will get a library full of educational books and aids, courtesy Grolier. And you will receive a copy of every book to be published by OWOS, totally free of cost and a chance to win premium books and educational aids from Grolier.”

Why it might be a killer

A noble endeavor like this one deserves to do well.

Some questions

Are there other initiatives like it being carried out in other parts of the world, catering for related charitable purposes?

What it does

In a world saturated with pointless Twitter apps and sites that are as useless as you can imagine, it is encouraging to come across one that serves a noble purpose such as Our World Our Stories. This Indian initiative has the following objective: if 100,000 followers are reached, a library full of educational books and aids will be created for the children supported by Project Why.

You might not have heard about Project Why, and a few words about it will not go amiss. Basically, it is a not-for-profit organization that has the aim of providing education support and the betterment of life conditions in slums, both for children and their families. This non-profit organization is based in New Dehli.

I find this initiative an excellent way of helping those who need it the most. And note that by following OWOS you can win prizes such as books and related materials. It is good to see the ones after this project have thought of ways of spicing the interest of internauts. I wish them all the best with this initiative, and I sincerely hope to see projects like this being established in the Western world.

NextBigSound.com – Measuring The Interaction With Music

Posted by KillerStartups.com - all | August 31, 2009 .

Some questions

How is this service going to evolve in the future?

In their own words

“Track how millions of fans interact with online music everyday.”

Why it might be a killer

It will be very interesting for a wide variety of users that want to access data like the popularity of their favorite artists, as well as having the chance to get good music.

What it does

Next Big Sounds is an interesting project that was created to give you and your friends the possibility to see the way many band’s fans interact with music online. This is great isn’t it? I tend to think that anything that makes it easier for you to find anything you need is good. When it comes to having a real time experience sharing music with your friends this is going to be a positive solution for you to explore. Imagine you are looking for an specific artist or song: the only thing you need to do in order to find the data you are keen on is inputting any word related to it, and you will get an overview making clear the amount of plays on the artist’s MySpace, Last.fm and iLike profile pages.

All the data you need is going to be ordered by week, month or all time. In addition to this, you will have the chance to learn about how many fans are already following your preferred artists on these sites. As you already know, these sites are not the only ones where you can find data about your favorite artists. You can do it on Facebook and Twitter and you will be provided with different graphs representing the way this information is changing over time.

Because it can be used very easily by anybody, and it is fast and effective.
